Moro Gayang

$239.00$289.99

The Gayang Sword has a blade forged from 5160/D2 high carbon steel that has been imbued with a hardness of 58-60 HRC. The blade spine is suitably thick and the edge is sharpened. The false edge is not sharpened and it retains much of the thickness of the spine.

The grip is artfully carved from native Filipino Kamagong wood and finished with a high level of polish. The bolster and pommel nut are brass and the matched scabbard is carved from wood. The scabbard was finished with decorative bands of rattan and a darkened steel spring lock retaining clip which locks over the lip of the blade guard to secure the sword within the scabbard.

A fast striking blade, the Gayang can chop and hack with notable power. Unlike many Filipino swords which focus the blade design of cutting, the Gayang has a more minimal curve and a fairly straight tip. This tip, unlike most swords, has a thick spine designed to give it greater rigidity. This is a blade tip that is designed to thrust with great force and to impart most of the power of the strike into the target with minimal loss to flexing.

Some Filipino cultures (such as the Moro), did wear armor and a thrusting tip such as this would be better served to defeat that defense than weapons designed to maximize cutting potential. Butted mail with brass and horn plates typically comprised such armored defenses and a rigid thrusting blade tip such as this would be quite good at splitting asunder such links to strike the foe within.

Please Note: It is common for the tropical hardwood used to craft the grip and scabbard of these weapons to develop small cracks as the wood adjusts to our temperate environment. We inspect these items for major cracks and will not send such items to you. We will however send items that may have small, light cracks. These are light cosmetic blemishes and we will not send you an item with a crack that impacts the structural integrity and usefulness of the weapon. These small and light cracks are common to the type of wood used.

By routinely applying a light coating of protective oil you can protect the wood from drying out in your own home.
