This ‘’Munitions Grade” item is not up to our normal high standards. Munitions grade items will typically have various bends or twists in the blades, basically rendering them as 2nds quality. These items are still a great choice for collecting and re-enacting and functional pieces will still be functional. Please keep this in mind when ordering.

This light cavalry saber of the Imperial Guard crafted by Weapon Edge swords has a blade of tempered 1095 high carbon steel. Much of the blade is blued and further embellished in gilt with the symbols of Napoleon’s Empire - a fashionable adornment of the blade popular by those who could afford such treatment for their swords in the Napoleonic age. On the spine is inscribed the identity of the warrior who once bore it to battle; a ‘’Chasseur a Cheval de la Garde Imperial’’ - a Horse Chasseur of the Imperial Guard. It is replicated from a sword belonging to a most prestigious regiment indeed.

The hilt is of brass and the grip is wrapped in robust black leather and inlaid with bands of twisted brass wire for an attractive and well-functioning saber grip. The pommel is cast in the face of a regal lion and the guard on a single side features a portrait, perhaps of the Emperor himself, in the Neoclassical flair then in vogue.

The sword is matched with a companion scabbard of brass which is richly cast in the symbology of the Empire. It has a pair of hanging rings of brass and the chape if fitted with a fluted chape protector of steel to guard the tip of the scabbard from impacts.

The Imperial Guard Horse Chasseurs were often selected by Napoleon to form his personal escort and bodyguard while on campaign. In solidarity with these men Napoleon often wore the green coat and trappings of a colonel of this regiment. An elite force of light cavalrymen, their bravado was enshrined within Garicault’s painting of the ‘’Charging Chasseur’’ - look closely and you will see that the immortalized cavalryman wields a saber quite similar to the one replicated here.

The Imperial Guard Horse Chasseurs were not simply a well-dressed bodyguard of toy cavalrymen; on several notable instances they crossed sabers with powerful enemies and routed them. The combats with their foes were the ‘’knightly’’ contests of the day; at Austerlitz Napoleon sent both the Imperial Guard Horse Chasseurs and his Mamelukes to duel the cavalry of the Russian Imperial Chevalier Guard. Together they drove off the Russian elite cavalrymen and even captured their commander, Prince Repnin of Russia.

Whilst on campaign from Russia the Horse Chasseurs even crossed sabers with the famed Cossack Cavalrymen, who attempted to cut down Napoleon himself by charging en-masse at him and the Horse Chasseurs in a bid to overwhelm them. Their gambit failed on the edges of the flashing sabers of the Imperial Guard Horse Chasseurs.
