The Spangenhelm derives its Germanic name from the ‘’Spangen’’ strips that form the reinforced frame of the helm. The open regions are then filled with plates that are riveted to these Spangen. Simple to make, the Spangenhelm was in use in Europe as early as the 3rd Century AD. With padding, it provides good protection for the skull and the nasal bar prevents the top half of the face from being cut into. It was widespread throughout the dark ages and the early medieval period and would be worn by knights, professional men-at-arms and well-equipped medieval levies throughout the entirety of the continent. It existed in a stylistically different form in the Near East as well. It would be overtaken by similar, conical nasal helms that were mostly made from a single piece of metal - a stronger helm than the multi-jointed spangenhelm.

The Spangenhelm and its derivatives are shown to be the dominant war helmet throughout the Bayeux Tapestry which depicts the Norman Conquest of England. Both the Norman Knights and their Saxon foes are shown wearing these nasal helms.

This Spangenhelm is crafted from 18 gauge steel and riveted construction. The exterior has been darkened for an antiqued appearance. Its interior is blackened and lined with an integrated, adjustable black cloth helmet liner with an accompanying, adjustable leather chinstrap and metal buckle.
