The Windlass Steelcrafts Half-Basket hilt sword has an unsharpened backsword-style blade of high carbon steel. The basket hilt is crafted from blued steel and the grip is overlaid in genuine rayskin inlaid with twisted steel wire. The basket of this reproduction is quite large - large enough to accommodate a large hand, thus making this sword a good choice for large-handed collectors who have found their hands too large for many other basket-hilted swords. The scabbard is of leather and finished with a blued steel chape and locket.

The half-basket hilt backsword was a popular battlefield weapon of the mid-17th century in Western Europe and it featured most prominently in the English Civil War. Well-suited to the age of ‘’Pike and Shotte’’, the single-edged blade with a thick spine was sufficiently robust for the battlefield and the basket gave much greater hand protection than earlier sword types.

Popular with the cavalry of both sides of the English Civil War, even Oliver Cromwell of the Parliamentarian forces wielded such a sword, albeit a more embellished example.

These swords were capable of strong chops and hacks, and the thick spine not only strengthened the blade, but stiffened it substantially enough to allow the backsword to be used in the manner of a short lance when on horseback. In a way this makes it a precursor to the heavy-cavalry sword of later centuries.
