This Officer’s Courtly Smallsword has a triangular, fullered blade of EN45 high carbon steel. The filigree-embossed hilt is plated nickel over brass. The wooden grip is embellished with braided twists of brass wire. The sword is paired with a wood-core scabbard which has been overlaid in black leather and finished with a plated nickel over brass protective chape and locket. This sword with its triangular cross-section of a blade is optimized specifically for thrusting and quick, first-strike action in a duel. The clamshell guard able protects the hand and especially the finger that can be secured into the ring above the guard - this accomodation for fingering the guard gives the hand much better control of the tip of the blade. Though the sword looks delicate, the thickened and stiffened triangular cross-section makes for a robust blade that can inflict wounds that are deceptively deadly. A stab wound from such a weapon may not look as visually impressive as the sweeping cut from a saber, but vital organs lie mere inches beneath the skin of the torso and a sword such as this could have reached them with ease. A true duelist’s sword, the triangular blade could even grievously wound a foe even should it only strike flesh - triangular stab wounds are very difficult to treat and suture, much more so than standard, thinner stab wounds.
