This reproduction of a WWI German Army Stahlhelm is constructed from 18 gauge steel with a period ‘’feldgrau’’ field gray painted finish. The interior has a sturdy and supple leather suspension liner which can be adjusted to fit. Padded inserts are stitched onto the back side of the leather liner. A black leather chin strap with brass hardware completes this Stahlhelm.

Literally meaning ‘’steel helmet’’ the Stahlhelm addressed the need for increased protection for the head and neck to address unnecessarily high casualties from shell fragments and debris. The boiled leather Pickelhaube, a mainstay of earlier conflicts, was unsuited to the new ways of warfare and the attrition caused by head injuries quickly proved it. The design of the Stahlhelm did draw some inspiration from the medieval Sallet - a helmet style popular in central Europe centuries before.
