This elaborate, hand-painted Roman Scutum is based on a surviving 3rd century example found in Dura Europos, Syria. It likely belonged to a member of the military garrison of the Roman-held city. The Dura Europos scutum and others like it demonstrate just how ornate the painted design on Roman shields could be. It was painted with intricate geometric design, as well as the symbols of victory; namely a mighty lion and winged Victories.

Perhaps soldiers in the barracks painstakingly applied the designs to their shields to while away the hours in the barracks - or it could be that wealthier officers commissioned artwork upon their shields to further distinguish themselves.

Inspired by the Dura Europos shield, this scutum is crafted from poplar wood which is tightly bound in linen before painting. A wooden horizontal bar forms the center-grip and a brass shield boss completes the scutum.

Please Note: The shield ships with the shield boss unmounted, so some assembly is required. Mounting hardware is included. Due to being hand painted, the precise hue of the shield colors and execution of its design can vary.

Please Note: it is common for this item to have patination on the brass shield rim and shield boss - it can be cleaned to a bright sheen with polishing paste and scuff pads.
