The Nuremberg Great Helm is based on a 14th Century original example - it is crafted from 20 gauge steel that has been blued for a darkened finish. Like the original, the helmet was finished by embellishing it with gold paint. Additionally, a chainmail aventail of darkened steel and brass butted chainmail rings is riveted onto the helmet. The interior of the helmet has been blackened to give it some resistance to rust. A separate padded cotton arming cap is included.

This reproduction is based on a c.1375 German Great Helm that is now on display Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg. Like the original helm, the gold accenting was painted onto the helmet. Although it is not shown in many reproductions, painting helmets, with either accenting (as in this case) or with heraldry was quite common throughout the medieval era.
