This Late Medieval Arming Sword by Balaur Arms is a nimble cut-and-thrust sword; its unobtrusive design makes it eminently suitable as an everyday sidearm sword for the knight or professional man of arms. It also functions well as a secondary, close-combat melee weapon for medieval soldiery, levies and guild militia who although primarily armed with missile weapons or polearms would often have such a sword at the ready for an in-close, cut-and-thrust fighting scrum.

The blade is well-tempered EN45 high carbon steel with a hollow-ground cross section to substantially reduce unneeded weight whilst retaining a prominent blade spine for stiffness. Towards the main cutting portion of the blade the spine takes on an overall flattened profile to reduce blade drag in a cut and its tapered profile ensures that it has substantial thrusting ability.

The crossguard and pommel are steel and the blade is mounted into a hilt with a robust, squared-off peen over the convex disc pommel. These steel hilt components are hand forged like many medieval originals. The wooden grip is well-bound in tightly fitted leather. Included with the sword is a wooden scabbard with a tight binding of black leather and a protective steel chape.

This 2nd Quality sword is being sold at discounted price because it did not meet brand quality standards. These factory second swords are sturdily made, have a quality spring temper and good design coupled with attention being paid to weight, balance and handling. However, these 2nd quality swords do have some production issues that we hope will be corrected in the future. The following are some of the common issues which may be present with these 2nd quality items:

Blades that have a twist - some have this present in the general length, but more commonly it is the tips alone which have a twist in the blade. These twists / blade warps are not as pronounced as items we rate as ‘’munitions grade’’ and thus these swords can still be sharpened and used capably for target cutting, though these blade shape irregularities will necessarily be sub-optimal for highly refined techniques.

Pommels which may not line up with the hilt

Roughly-executed blade slots in crossguards with spots of visible glue present.

Some visible glue at the seams of the leather

Scabbard chape may not match example in photo.

The last few photo of this item shows an example of a blade twist.
