When worn with the longer katana, the pair, then called ‘’daisho’’ together, signified that their bearer was a samurai, for only they could carry two swords. Useful for indoor fighting or a close-quarter melee, the Wakizashi was also often used to behead defeated opponents or to commit the ritual suicide of seppuku. It was common for a samurai to leave his katana at the entrance of a home, keeping his Wakizashi at his side. Non-samurai of the ‘’Chonin’’ class could also carry Wakizashi as the Katana was strictly for samurai. Merchants, wary of bandits, might have a Wakizashi with them on their travels.

This Wakizashi, by Dynasty Forge has a blade of 1095 high carbon steel differentially tempered with clay, leaving the visible white-steel hamon. The blade is machine polished, with the final polishing done by hand. The blade is securely mounted into the tsuka with bamboo mekugi, allowing for disassembly and customization if desired.

The wood tsuka grip is wrapped with rayskin ‘’same’’ and the tsuka-ito wrapping is of black silk with two dragon menuki beneath. The iron tsuba and fittings, accented in gold, feature the Dragon - symbol of power, luck and natural forces. The saya scabbard is wood, coated with glossy black lacquer with a matching sageo cord of woven black silk. It comes with a blue cloth sword bag.

Please Note: It is common and standard for the scabbards of these swords to have scratches, scuffs, small indentations or light and thin cracks in the scabbard lacquer.

Please Note: It is common for this item to have different menuki when restocked from manufacturer. Menuki style may not match photos as shown.
