The Small Sword was a weapon of the gentleman - both for his protection in a crowded street against lurking ruffians, and for dueling his peers. It was most popular from the mid 17th to late 18th century. Evolving in concept from the larger rapier, the small sword is shorter and is entirely given over to the thrust in its technique, as the rapier still had some slashing ability. The blades geometry belies this function; triangular in shape, it creates a wider wound that is much more difficult to treat. Whilst the entry wound of a thrusting weapon can seem small compared to a larger slashing weapon, it is likely to be more dangerous, for beneath that hole deep internal damage is done - all of it much more difficult to treat. In contrast, a slashing weapons damage might be confined to the outer areas of the body. Thus the blade geometry, and dextrous movement of this light blade make it considerably more dangerous then its seemingly delicate form implies. It was ideally suited for the fencing man-to-man fencing technique of the day, focusing on footwork, timing and a concentrated, duel-ending thrust.

This small sword, made by Dynasty Forge has a blade of 1060 high carbon steel. The sides of the blade are blunted, but the tip is very sharp. The hilt is entirely of steel with inlaid steel wire into the grip. It comes with a wood-core scabbard, overlaid with tight black leather and steel throat, chape and hanging ring.
