Unique among Japanese swords, the double-edged Kogarasu Maru (‘’Little Crow’’) was supposedly crafted by the legendary swordsmith Amakuni in the 8th Century. Three swords with blades akin to the Kogarasu Maru still exist from this time period, and others have been crafted since. The sword seems to be an amalgam of blade qualities of the Katana or Tachi, melded with the double-edged point of the older Ken sword.

Amakuni was the leader of a group of supremely talented bladesmiths of the Yamato Province who worked for the Emperor of Japan whose bladesmithing prowess endowed the Emperor’s warriors with the greatest swords in Japan. Credit for the creation of the first Tachi longswords is given to Amakuni, and likewise the design of the Kogarasu Maru is attributed to him. A Kogarasu Maru blade that was once a treasured possession of the Taira Clan is now kept in the Imperial Collection.

The first half of the Kogarasu Maru blade is similar to the Tachi or Katana; single-edged with a thick spine. The last half of the blade converts into a double-edged blade, giving the sword a certain directional versatility that the normal Tachi or Katana lacks. Though double-edged, the sword still has the inherent stiffness of the katana, making it an excellent thrusting sword. This comes at some expense of striking power, as the blade will not have the mass of the thick-spined katana driving it deep in the strike.

This Kogarasu Maru sword crafted by Dynasty Forge is made from three high carbon steels of 1095, 1080 and 1060 folded together into a single blade. This folding process creates a Tamehagane-like ‘’Hada’’ pattern upon the blade with the appearance of wood grain. The three steels are folded 8-12 times to create thousands of internal layers. The blade was then differentially heat-treated with the traditional clay tempering method. These folding processes were traditionally done to minimize impurities in steel (the initial quality being substantially lesser than modern steel) and to give it strength and flexibility with a mixture of different steels with these properties. The quality of modern steels make this process unnecessary, but this aspect of traditional craftsmanship gives the sword a solid bridge to the blades and blacksmiths of the past, not to mention its unique, folded appearance that belies this traditional technique.

The blade is machine polished, with the final polishing being done by hand. The blade is solidly mounted into its tsuka with bamboo mekugi, whose removal allows for maintenance disassembly or customization if desired. The tsuba, kashira and fuchi are crafted from iron and the tsuba is in the simple ring form favored by legendary swordsman Musashi. The habaki and seppa are of brass. The wooden grip is wrapped with rayskin and overlaid with black silk tsuka-ito wrap with two brass menuki wrapped beneath. The wooden Saya scabbard is coated with black lacquer and has a matching black sageo cord. Comes with a black cloth sword bag.
