The New Version… This is the second incarnation of the Medieval Knight Bastard Sword from DSA. The first model was a very fast and handy Type XVI (although DSA called it a XIV) with a 30″ blade and a very good point. It was a true Bastard Sword with the blade of an arming sword and a very long grip. This time around, there’s no doubt that it’s now a Longsword.
This version has a blade much closer to 36″, which makes it unsuitable for sword and buckler. I’m sorry to see the new version turned into a longsword, but that’s all a matter of personal preference and fighting style. I don’t know why they still call it a Type XIV, or even a bastard sword. It’ a good sword however, whatever it’s called.
The balance is still very close to the guard which gives the sword a light feel and fast response, but the longer blade makes movement of the point a little tricky. It’s easy to move the point too far off line when countering, but then again, that’s a matter of style.
I think that there are already plenty of longswords on the market already, but this is a good one and might suit another student of the sword well.
