This sword is named after the second of the three famed English victories over the French in the Hundred Years War - Poitiers. The greatest victory by Edward, the Black Prince, King John of France was forced to surrender in person in the September of 1356

It was a dramatic end to what could have been a victory for the French, who outnumbered the English at least three to one. Feeling safe in their armor, an initial cavalry charge floundered as the archers targeted the less-armored mounts of the knights. Giving up on cavalry, John dismounted his knights and successive, large waves of infantry and horseless knights slogged across the field to challenge the English on foot, but were stalled and beaten back. The final and strongest wave, led by King John himself was mired with the English in melee - even the English archers, low on arrows, dropped bows and went shoulder to shoulder with the infantry with their arming swords, hammers and daggers. King John was undone when a hidden reserve of English cavalry circled around the French and descended upon them from a nearby wood. In disorder, the French lines shattered. Though King John, his son and entourage held their ground, surrendering when encircled, the chaos of the turn-tail rout saw dozens of French lords captured. The absence of the King, his Lords and their crushing ransoms plunged France into anarchy.

This sword is representative of the swords that might have been wielded by the nobles or professional men-at-arms of either army. The blade has the armor-penetrating taper and diamond cross section common to late Medieval swords and a wide crossguard that not only protects the hand, but could also be used to ''punch'' into foes.

Crafted by Darksword Armory, the blade is made from 1060 high carbon steel and tempered to a Rockwell Hardness of 53. The blade is fitted through the mild steel guard and pommel and peened against the pommel for strength. The wooden grip is tightly wrapped and sewn over with dark brown leather. The sword comes with a wood-core scabbard, likewise covered in form-fitted brown leather with a matching, integrated sword belt.
