The Francisca throwing axe was the trademark weapon of the Frankish tribes in the dark ages. Before battle was jointed, the Franks would throw their axes en masse at the enemy. Their use was noted by the Roman historian Procopius:

’’…each man carried a sword and shield and an axe…and they are accustomed always to throw these axes at one signal in the first charge and thus shatter the shields of the enemy and kill the men.’’

This francisca , made by Fabri Armorum, is hand-made in the Czech Republic. The axe head is blunted steel. The top of the handle has a wooden wedge driven into it to tighten the fit, and the axe is held in place with rivets. The weapon is guaranteed for two years by the manufacturer under normal stage/sport combat conditions
