Designed with competitive cutting in mind, this Folded Steel Competition Cutting Katana from Imperial Forge is designed to ably cut goza, green bamboo, tatami omote and tameshigiri. The 1060 high carbon steel has been folded 14 times to produce 16,384 layers of steel within, leaving a ‘’Hada’’pattern akin to flowing water running the length of the blade. Katanas were traditionally folded to purge impurities from the steel blooms extracted from iron sands. Modern steel is technically quite pure and this folding process is now done for the aesthetic appeal of traditionally folded steel and the visible results of the craftsmanship involved.

The blade was then differentially heat treated with clay to leave visible ‘’hamon’’ wave of harder steel along the edge. The blade was then differentially heat treated with clay to leave visible ‘’hamon’’ wave of harder steel along the edge. The body of the blade was tempered to a Rockwell Hardness of 44 HRC and the edge is 62 HRC. The blade has a thick tang and blade profile with no Bo-Hi, giving it more cutting mass. The tip has the profile of the medium length Chu-Kissaki.

The dragon tsuba and koshirae fittings are of iron and the wood tsuka is covered in blackened rayskin, and tightly wrapped with dark green tsuka-ito cord - two dragon menuki lie beneath. The ito grip wrap has been double wrapped to protect the grip from sweat. The fittings are held in place with bamboo mekugi, whose removal allows for maintenance disassembly or customization. The habaki is of brass and the seppa are of copper. The wooden saya scabbard is finished with black lacquer and has a matching dark green sageo cord. The sword comes with a red and gold silk sword bag.
