This steel bladed recreation of the bronze and iron age Naue II type sword. It has a blade of 1095 high carbon steel that was tempered to possess a hardness of 59 HRC. The grip is carved walnut and the thick blade tang has been brass-riveted to the wooden hilt. Original swords of this type were crafted in a similar manner of riveting the tang to grip halves. The sword has a companion scabbard of stitched black leather with a belt loop. This solidly constructed sword recreates one of the ‘’grip-tongue’’ swords from the bronze age; the Naue II and swords of its type date from the 13th century BC to the 6th century BC. The earlier examples of the sword were cast from bronze and the later specimens have blades of iron. The Naue II blade design straddled the materials transition from bronze to iron, yet the design remained similar. |
