This Hanwei recreation of a 9th Century Saxon sword was created with a technique used by the Saxons and Vikings to produce a blade that features a pattern-welded core with high-carbon edge sections. This technique was used by the old-time smiths as a means of producing blades that were sharp, resilient and decorative and, eleven hundred years on, CAS Hanwei has made them affordable. The sword’s design is based on a 9th Century piece found in the bank of a stream in England in 1976 and now on display in the Yorkshire Museum.

This Hanwei Saxon sword has a blade of sharp, pattern-welded high carbon steel. The guard and pommel are of blackened metal. The grip is of brown leather interspersed with metal bands. The hard-core scabbard is overlaid in brown leather and finished with blackened metal throat and chape and two bands of steel with hanging rings.
