Designed to be a practical and economical cutting katana, the Hanwei Maru Renshu is fitted with a blade of 5160 high carbon steel that has been sharpened and mono-tempered. A blade of this type is purpose-built to be a practical cutting sword; a through-hardened blade of high quality steel has a degree of ‘’spring’’ to it and is substantially less likely to take a bend in the case that a poor or off-target cut is made. In contrast to this, the soft spine of differentially-hardened katana blades can suffer a bend if sub-optimal cutting technique is utilized.

This version of the Maru Renshu has a long spine groove - the bo-hi, in its blade geometry. This is primarily intended to reduce weight and increase the responsiveness of the sword, though it trades some of the heavier spine mass that katana with no present bo-hi use to impart a degree of additional cutting power. The bo-hi does have an interesting side-effect; the displacement of air over the uneven blade surface produces an easily audible ‘’whoosh’’ when the blade strikes - much more so than a blade with no such groove. This sound, dubbed the ‘’Tachikaze’’ (sword wind) has a pitch that varies according to the angle by which the blade moves through the air and thus can be used by a trained ear to quickly discern the edge alignment of the blade in the strike.

The habaki and seppa are brass and the tsuba, fuchi and kashira grip fittings are iron. The tsuka is carved wood inlaid with panels of faux rayskin; it is wrapped with black suede ito leather for a grip wrap and completed with a pair of interwoven brass menuki.

The saya is crafted from carved wood with horn koiguchi and kojiri; it is finished with a layer of textured black lacquer and a red sageo cord.
