CAS Iberia is marking its 30th Anniversary in the sleek lines and folded steel of a Hanwei katana made in homage to Miyamoto Musashi. The sword has the simple iron ring tsuba espoused by the master swordsman and author; a pair of crossed oar menuki are fitted beneath the ito wrap to honor Musashi’s famous duel with Sasaki Kojiro.

A masterful Nodachi swordsman Kojiro was inauspiciously known as the ‘’Demon of the Western Provinces’’. The perceptive Musashi bested the daunting Kojiro by clouding his judgement and techniques with prideful anger; Musashi not only arrived late and in an unkempt, disorderly state, but he had even neglected to bring a sword! Instead he came ashore with a large wooden bokken carved from a simple boatman’s oar.

Infuriated by Musashi’s intentional failure to take him seriously, Kojiro fought brashly and thus his technique suffered. Cool and calculated, Musashi laid low the ‘’Demon’’ swordsman with his humble oar-bokken. Musashi’s duel with Kojiro reminds us that the mind is every bit the weapon to the warrior as his sword. Musashi ensured that he had won the duel even before he set foot on the island.

Limited to a production of 250, this 30th Anniversary Musashi Katana has a hand-forged and folded blade of K120C high carbon steel. The blade has been differentially hardened and the traditional clay-tempering technique has imparted a clear and distinct hamon on the blade edge. The edge has a hardness of 60 HRC and the spine of the blade has a hardness of 40 HRC; the harder edge resists dulling and the softer spine absorbs shock. The folds of the blade are visible as a prominent ripple-like Hada texture on the blade. A long Bo-Hi groove reduces weight in the blade spine with minimal sacrifice to strength. When it was finished the blade was signed by the smith on the Nakago tang.

The tsuba, fuchi and kashira fittings of this katana are of humble and elegant iron. The habaki and seppa are silvered brass. The production number of each katana is stamped on the back of the habaki. The wooden tsuka grip is overlaid with high quality rayskin and knotted over with deep blue silk tsuka-ito cord. A pair of silvered brass menuki are fitted beneath the tightly knotted ito cord.

The wooden saya scabbard is finished with a glossy black lacquer and highly polished buffalo horn fittings. The knotted two-tone sageo cord is a deep blue hue with a sea-gray backing.

The sword comes with a Certificate of Authenticity which details its fittings and the signature of the nakago. The sword also comes with a black cloth sword bag and a Hanwei sword maintenance kit.
