The Kaiyou Katana is an Kensei-Class blade from Skyjiro Forge - this is regarded as their collector-grade category. This sharp, mono-steel katana blade is crafted from .75% high carbon folded steel. The blade folding process produced 7400 internal layers when this blade was forged. These layers can be seen on the surface of the blade, looking akin to rippling water along its length. The blade has been made with the Kobuse laminated construction method - the blade is a core of softer steel overlaid with a harder steel, giving the blade a hardened exterior and a flexible, shock-absorbing core. When tempered, the blade was differentially treated with the traditional clay method. This creates a hard edge to cut decisively while retaining superior sharpness over softer blades. The tempering and laminate construction leave the blade body softer, allowing it to flex and absorb shock in the strike. This differential tempering has left a visible wave-length hamon of pale steel along the edge, denoting the boundary of these two steel hardnesses. After tempering, the blade was polished with Japanese water stones.

Kaiyou means ‘’ocean’’ and this katana is adorned with the symbols of the sea; Its tsuba features tumultuous storm-tossed waves. Its menuki feature a small war boat piloted by a samurai and his retainer. Even the prominent hamon seems to have been made with the waves of the ocean in mind.

The Tsuba, Fuchi and Kashira fittings are cast in darkened bronze with their details picked out in bright bronze. The habaki and seppa are of pure silver vermeil over bronze. The tsuka grip is of rayskin tightly overlaid with red silk tsuka-ito. Two bronze menuki lie beneath the tsuka-ito.

The wooden saya scabbard is coated in black lacquer. Its upper section has an inlaid rayskin-like section. The mouth of the scabbard, the Koiguchi, is of water buffalo horn and a red and white sageo cord is knotted to the scabbard. The sword comes with a Skyjiro production certificate.
