This chainmail hauberk is composed of a tight ‘’knit’’ of blackened mild steel flat rings. The rings are constructed with an alternate-rivet construction - half the rings are dome riveted and they are interspersed with solid flat rings.

Perhaps one of the most iconic depictions of mail-armoured warriors is the depiction of the Norman Knights on the Bayeux Tapestry - Clad nearly head to toe in mail, their hauberks formed the core of the mail defense. These cavalrymen were clearly elite warriors, as the amount of mail they wore was a great investment in both money and time.

Mail is a great defense against cutting and slashing weapons, and well-made mail can provide good protection from thrusting attacks, though the design of the offending weapon is a great factor when the matter of penetrating armored links is to be discussed. A glance at the Bayeux Tapestry will show that many of William’s Norman Cavalrymen carried a large kite shield - their mail may have been a good defense, but it was no substitute for a shield. Shields had always been a supplement to mail and warriors would not begin to discard shields en-masse until the advent of plate armor.
