This Roman Lorica Hamata is crafted from wedge-riveted rings of mild steel which alternate with solid flat rings. Each ring measures 9 mm in diameter and 17 gauge in thickness; they are darkened for a more authentic appearance. The shoulder doublet panels are edged with stitched leather and their closure hook is cast from brass.

The use of alternating riveted and solid rings was a pattern that the Romans themselves utilized, probably to reduce the time and labor involved in crafting a Lorica Hamata by halving the amount of rings to rivet. Flat rings were preferred because they were easier to create; they were simply punched out of sheets of steel. Round rings from wire were more work due to the need to wind, unwind, and then clip rings.

Well-crafted mail Hamata brought excellent and dependable protection from cuts and slashes and with a backing of good padding could give notable protection from percussion and piercing weapons. While Segmentata had its advantages in protection from piercing weapons over Hamata, it had drawbacks; it required more skillful armorers to create and maintain the Segmentata, and it was more difficult to don. For whatever reason, whether out of convenience, cost or utility, the Segmentata, which in Imperial Rome co-existed with the Hamata, was superseded entirely by Hamata by the 4th Century.

IMPORTANT SIZING TIP: To accurately measure whether you will comfortably fit into this coat of mail it is necessary to first wear the clothing or padded gambeson that you intend to wear beneath the chainmail. Then measure your chest size over these additional layers. This way the additional width of your chest with these accumulated layers is accounted for when determining if the mail will fit properly.
