Most popular in the 18th century, the Tricorne hat evolved from flat-brimmed hats out of utility. 16th Century Spanish soldiers in rainy Flanders would pin their brims upwards, making directed gutters that move rainwater away from the head. It was widely adopted by the French in their 1667 conflict with Spain, and the military fashion spread to the French court, making it fashionable throughout the entirety of Europe among all social classes. It fell out of fashion around the early 1800s, replaced by Bicornes and Shakos in the military.

This sturdy, utilitarian tricorne is made from gray-black leather with an antiqued finish. Heavy leather strands keep the brim of this tricorn affixed to its central cap. The hat is held together with heavy leather stitching.
