14th Century Gambeson – Black – Lord of Battles

(4 customer reviews)

$128.99

This thick quilted gambeson, crafted from thick cotton and fastened with thick cloth buttons on its front and on the sleeve cuffs. Its interior is lined with cotton felt. As this gambeson is crafted from organic material, it will breathe better than other poly-fill gambesons on the market.

This gambeson is handcrafted, sizes will vary slightly – so these measurements should be taken as approximations.

A thick, padded jacket common to Medieval and Renaissance warriors, the Gambeson was a protective layer beneath chain or plate armor – it served both as a shock absorbing layer and chafe protection for its wearer. Poorer combatants and lightly-armored archers and skirmishers might wear only the gambeson as their major piece of body armor.

Gambesons first began to be common in the 10th century and were largely intended to be a layer beneath chainmail. By the later years of the Medieval era, it became common for soldiers to wear a substantially thicker gambeson, sometimes called a padded jack, as their main armor. Quilted with many layers of fabric, typically linen, a padded jack could act like a sort of kevlar and give its wearer excellent protection from cuts and slashes. It could even stop arrows in some circumstances. Additional protection could be added to such gambesons with jack-chains, a sort of partial-plate protection which could stop a strong slash from cutting into the shoulders and arms.

Good protection I bought this gambeson for protection while sparring and it does that well enough. However, it is rather uncomfortable around the upper arms. The armpit it sewn very tight and it restricts movement somewhat. I recommend ordering a size larger to avoid this as it is otherwise a well protective and good looking gambeson for a fair price. Note that I use this to spar with synthetic swords by rawlings and don’t know if it would be appropriate padding for steel weapons.

Great and durable I have been using this gambeson for 2 years now. I wear it as an arming jacket for full contact armored fighting. This ranges from polearms, sword and shield, longsword, hand to hand, etc. I also use this as my sparring jacket for HEMA. I study german long sword of the Lichtenauer school and I primarily train, spar, and compete with steel. I have taken multiple cuts, slices, and thrusts with this jacket and gives great protection (along side the other recommended protection gear).

As the previous reviewer mentioned, this jacket was on the stiff side when first purchased (I have the XXL). The buttons were even difficult to operate. But two years later, this it is completely maneuverable and comfortable. While practicing longsword I can switch between high and low guards with much ease. It does not restrict movement at all. I’d have to say after a few months of regular use, it was nice and broken-in. I highly recommend this jacket!

Well made Having tried on the one my friend ordered, I realized that I would have to order one in xxl, as the size large was too tight around my shoulders. Other than that one caveat it’s a well made gambeson.

Best gambeson I’ve had so far I’ve ordered a few gambesons from this sight, mixed results, but this one is the best so far. I’m a pretty lean guy but this gambeson in a size small is a perfect fit. Easy to take on and off with a squire, via the front buttons.
Looks great, feels great, feels sturdy and protective, definitely a plus.

Like others have said, a little tight in the arms, and do be sure yours isn’t too tight, but once it gets worked in, should fit like a dream.
Very excited to break this in and make it fully apart of my kit. 10/10 would buy again if needed, solid product.
