King Richard Surcoat - Cotton

In Stock!

Alongside Henry VIII, Richard I, the ‘’Lionheart’’ is one of the iconic kings of England. He is the King of Robin Hood Legend, away on Crusade whilst England is unjustly governed by his brother John. He is most known for being contests against Saladin in the Third Crusade, and their military exploits and personal relations are the thing of medieval legend. Though he took Cyprus and Acre and had a great victory at Arsuf, Crusader infighting and the skill of Saladin stymied his full ambition. During the campaign Richard fell ill, and Saladin sent him fruit and even snow. After Arsuf Richard had lost his horse, and Saladin sent him two replacements.

Richard retook much of the territory lost to Saladin when the Muslim leader overthrew the Kingdom of Jerusalem, but Jerusalem itself would elude Richard. Saladin was ultimately unable to defeat Richard, but the two men exhausted one another’s armies and ended their conflict at a truce. For the return of some territory conquered by Richard, Jerusalem would, once again, be open to Christian pilgrims. The military skill and martial deeds of Richard earned him the praise of Muslim chroniclers and likewise Saladin was often remembered by Christian chroniclers in honorable terms, though both men did commit various atrocities in their careers.

This Richard the Lionheart sleeveless surcoat is made of red cotton and has the three lions of England embroidered upon the chest. A fitting tabard for anyone wishing to give their armor a distinctly English flair.
