This Baselard Short Sword by Tinker Pearce is a custom-built sword with a lenticular cross-section blade of 5160 high carbon steel; it is imbued with a final HRc 52 hardness after being Marquenched and tempered. The comfortable hilt is finely-polished and well-carved Desert Ironwood with a generous 4.5 long grip. This wooden hilt is surmounted by brass plates on both the guard and pommel and the blade tang is permanently secured into the hilt with a strong nut on the pommel which was reinforced with epoxy within the hilt. There is a crack in the pommel which has been filled in and sealed – it is visible in a close-up photo. The sword is completed with a companion scabbard of leather over a durable wooden core.

Baselards were most often made as daggers, but they did occasionally stretch to sword-length. A weapon such as this might have been a sidearm for an archer, or perhaps a Burgher’s weapon. The forward balance gives it good authority in the cut but the light weight keeps it quick and agile. Will be very good in cutting trials and makes an interesting and different ‘walking around’ sword. – Michael Tinker Pearce
