Cuivre Dragoon Saber – Universal Swords

$234.00$312.00

This early French Republic sword was first made for the Dragoon regiments in 1794 and was continually made in several different patterns throughout the history of the 1st French Empire. Long, straight-bladed and with a double fuller, it is a weighty sword intended to deliver devastating cuts and thrusts from horseback. The Dragoon regiments were trained to fight either as infantrymen or cavalry versatility being their primary weapon. Many of Napoleons Dragoons had seen several campaigns and were regarded as a veteran force.

This saber, reproduced by Universal Sword of India, is made from a tempered high-carbon steel blade. Cuivre is a French word for copper or brass, no doubt a reference to the prodigious amount of brass adorning this sword. The hilt is brass with a wire-wrapped grip of hardened leather. The wood-core scabbard is covered with leather and accented with brass fittings and rings. The spine of the blade bears the reproduced signature of Klingenthal The state-run manufactory for swords in east France.
