The falchion was considered a heavy, single edged weapon designed for heavy chopping. During the Renaissance its form became a little more elaborate, but its functionality remained the same. This was a heavy battle sword designed to oppose the combinations of plate and mail. The Italian Falchion is reproduced from a sword in the Florence Museum dating from about the first quarter of the 16th century
