Buttcaps were used to counter balance a spear, protect the end from splintering, and provided a last resort back up, should the spear tip be broken off in battle. This buttcap is constructed of high carbon steel.

| Customer Reviews: The Greek spearhead and buttcap are pretty impressive pieces, particularly for the price. The spearhead, though steel, shows definite Bronze-Age design features such as the heavy medial rib and reinforced point. However, the real surprise was the buttcap--much heavier than I had expected, obviously to counterbalance the weight of the head and a shaft of anywhere from 8 to 18 feet. Both pieces are of good quality and should provide long service (in my case, as visual aids for my Mythology and Drama classes). -- Kartaphilos |
