In the early days of Rome the army was organized into three infantry types. The lightest equipped of these were known as the Velitae. These unarmored soldiers would open the battle with a barrage of light javelins to soften up the enemy before the clash of the main forces. They were armed only with a small shield and a handful of javelins know as "hasta velitaris". This early Roman javelin features a carbon steel head affixed to a 1 inch thick hardwood shaft.
