This Angus Trim Type XIV.1 Arming Sword is a masterfully balanced cut and-thrust sword which has been optimized for performance cutting by Angus Trim’s close attention to blade geometry; its edges are expertly sharpened with an appleseed edge profile for a fine compromise between sharpness and edge durability. The widened base of the blade has a deep fuller to reduce unneeded weight and the blade tapers both in profile and thickness to a finely sloped and thin plane at the main cutting portion of the blade to create a form that slices into and through a target with ease.

The blade is 5160 high carbon steel with a final marquenched hardness of 51 – 53 HRc. The crossguard and pommel are crafted from steel with a heat-blued finish and the grip of stabilized hardwood is tightly bound in black leather. A permanent nut assembly robustly anchors the sword into the hilt for a solid construction.

‘’Years ago, I was asked to make a XIVa by a repeat customer. He sent me a link to a post on Myarmoury written by one of the few master smiths of the European medieval sword.

When Oakeshott did his typology, he didn’t do a a XIVa. But, there have been a couple researchers/ authors who have added to the typology, when they had a family of swords that could logically fit into their own classification. Considering that the above master smith claimed he knew of others, this could be {and probably should be} such a case.

The thing is, at that time, I was unaware of any antiques that would fit into such a classification. I felt uncomfortable making such a piece without finding a published antique that would fit.

Last spring, looking at the photos in “Medieval Swords from Southeastern Europe”, I stumbled on a blade with only a pommel mounted on it, that made me think XIVa. A classic XIV shape, with a hand a half tang. That inspired me to make one, the XIVa.1’’ – Angus Trim
