The Halfling Pipe, crafted by MacQueen Pipes of Canada, is formed from Ash wood and crafted and finished with techniques inspired by medieval woodworking and given multiple layering of stains and some scouring marks to give it a very folksy, storied and characterful appearance coupled with a textured, rough-hewn feel in the hand that belie its handcrafted origin. The stem is detachable for easy cleaning. The interior of the bowl is pre-carbonized to protect the wood.

Called a Lesepfeife (reading pipe) in Germany, the long-stemmed Churchwarden allows a reader to relax with a smoking pinch of tobacco whilst reading without the smoke of a close bowl obstructing his view of his text with smoke. This may be why such pipes are often associated with the image of the brooding intellectual or novelist.
