Additional information

Made by Dynasty Forge, this Daimyo-Class katana has a blade made from high carbon Tamahagane steel. Traditionally, Tamahagane was created from iron sands in a week long process by which the iron sands are fired in a clay tub with a charcoal fire. This is a mild-temperature smelting process that fuses the iron ore with carbon from the charcoal to create high-carbon iron ore. ”Blooms” of half-molten metal are created in the clay tub, after which the tub is broken to remove the blooms. The blooms are in a variety of carbon contents, and the folding methods that combine them into a single billet will further purify it into steel and give it strength. Tamahagane in Japanese translates into ”jewel steel” – a reference to its great worth. The Tamahagane used in this sword was made in China.

The steel was folded 8-12 times at the smith’s discretion and the layering process gives the blade strength and flex for shock absorbtion. The process creates a wood-grain pattern ”Hada” visible on the blade’s surface. The blade is tempered with the traditional clay process which hardens the edge beyond that of the blade, leaving a white-steel ”Hamon” along the edge. The blade was then hand-polished for over 60 hours with imported Japanese stones which finalize the blade’s geometry and polishes its surface into a steel sheen.

The sword is finished with a theme of bamboo and tigers cast in nickel-silver. Though the tiger (Taira) did not reside naturally in Japan, the stories of its grace and lethality from the mainland inspired the Japanese and their warriors. A live tiger once lived within Osaka Castle as a gift to the Emperor in 840 A.D. and was a source of inspiration and national pride. The tiger likewise adorns the kashira and fuchi. The tsuba, cast in the same metal features bamboo and cherry blossoms. The tsuka grip of wood is covered in rayskin and tightly wrapped with woven black silk tsuka-ito with two tiger menuki beneath. The wood Saya scabbard is coated with a red ”sunburst” of textured ”stone” lacquer with a black silk sageo. The sword comes with a navy blue cloth sword bag.

Please Note: It is common for the lacquer finish of the scabbards to have minor cosmetic blemishing. Also, the Menuki may not match what is pictured as it is common for the manufacturer to use different menuki for different production runs. It is also common for the sword to be configured for a single bamboo mekugi peg to be used instead of two.
