This Spangenhelm is constructed from riveted plates of 18 gauge steel; the blackened interior of the helm is finished with an adjustable leather suspension liner with an adjustable chin strap with a steel buckle.

The spangenhelm was an effective protection for the head for its time and it was relatively easy to construct as it constructed into a whole from separate riveted plates. Not only was it easier to create, but working with smaller pieces of steel was easier and more affordable in times that pre-dated a more widespread availability of good iron and steel. As metallurgy improved in later centuries it became easier to create later nasal-bar helms with most of the helm made from a single, solid, shaped piece of iron or steel.
