The Schloss Erbach sword from Windlass is a replica of an excellent and well-preserved German bastard sword from c. 1480 – it is now a highlight of the Oakeshott Institute collection in Minneapolis, but it takes its name from having once resided in the armory at Schloss Erbach. In true late-medieval German style the hilt has some naturalistic gothic elements matched with a blade that is well suited to the cut and thrust alike. This was clearly a sword for a knight or a professional warrior and it is a treasure to modernity that the original was preserved in exemplary condition.

The blade of this reproduction has been forged from 1065 high carbon steel and is well-tempered. The guard and pommel are steel and the grip is crafted from wood which is tightly overlaid in black leather. The sword is matched with a scabbard of thick and durable leather and has a steel chape and locket.

This sword rests in the Schloss Erbach Armoury and is a fine example of a high medieval/renaissance sword (classified as an Oakeshott type XVIII A). This is truly a beautiful example of a bastard sword, effective in the cut and the thrust. The steel parts are highly decorative and the high carbon steel blade is lightly hollow ground, giving the sword a great feel with one or two hands. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts®. Includes scabbard. Can be seen in Records Of The Medieval Sword by Ewart Oakeshott.
