Additional information

The Paper Crane Katana is a premium sword from Hanwei which melds Tamahagane steel with the fine aesthetics of Japanese culture; namely the origami paper crane which bring good luck, fortune and the pursuit of inner peace. The paper cranes are matched with well-detailed menuki fashioned in the form of prominent Noh theatre masks. Altogether, the traditionally-forged blade matched with powerful symbols of Japanese culture creates a sword with a dignified and noble presence.

The blade was made in the traditional manner by a highly skilled bladesmith using Tamahagane steel which was folded to refine it for purity. This is visible on the blade itself with its fine, wood-grain like Hada patterning created by the folding and melding of the steel Tamahagane billet pieces. After the blade had been forged into form it was tempered in the traditional clay-tempering manner which left the blade with a wave-like hamon which was made both bright and vibrant with a painstakingly careful blade polish to fully bring out the beauty of this complex blademaking process.

The tsuba, fuchi and kashira hilt components are fashioned from fine brass which is strikingly finished with bright brass and silver detailing set against highly-prized “Nanako” style stippled background. The habaki and seppa are bright brass and the habaki itself is fashioned for a close fit against the blade. The tsuka grip is crafted from wood and is inlaid with panels of genuine rayskin which are overlaid in knotted ito cord to complete the sword.

The saya scabbard houses a Kozuka knife which fits through the tsuba to rest in its notch in the saya. This is a feature seen on some exquisite originals that is rarely reproduced, but Hanwei has recreated this feature here. The Kozuka has a slim utility blade which has a grip of brass in a style to match the sword hilt which prominently features a Shamisen, a traditional plucked string instrument.

The scabbard itself is of well-carved wood which is finished with a smooth and glossy black lacquer which is paired with a sageo of fine hand-woven silk. Included is a Hanwei Japanese sword maintenance kit in its own wooden box and a premium cloth sword bag.
