This Shashka sword is etched on both sides with the Imperial Russian regalia of the Tsar on both sides of the blade and the blade itself is forged from 1055 high carbon steel which has been tempered. An iconic sword of Russia and the famed blade of the swift Cossack cavalry, Shashqa swords of this general style were popular with the Russian military cavalry in the late 19th century and both world wars. The slim saber was easy to wear and was worn “edge-up” in the scabbard to allow for a rapid draw and cut from both horseback and on foot.

The hilt has a guard and pommel of finely detailed cast brass which is embellished throughout in scrollwork. The grip is carved wood which has been painted. The sword is paired with a wooden scabbard which is enveloped in black leather and completed with brass fittings and a brass hanging ring.

I just received this today, and say that I am very well pleased.

I know nothing of historic accuracy, but whatever the case, it is simply a work of art with the etching and detail on the handle. This is especially a boon since CS no longer makes shashquas, and most others have the hammer and cycle.

I have not tested yet, and it seems a little top-heavy, but the sharpening is well done, and I look forward to testing it out. I was afraid of the “painted wood”, but this turned out well. In all, even if a little heavy, the beauty of this piece makes is well worth the purchase.
