The Sword of Fnor by Darksword Armoury is a fantasy sword with a namesake nod to Tolkiens Silmarillion. A longsword with a leaf-shaped blade, the swords blade is forged from 5160 high carbon steel that has been dual-tempered. This differential tempering is not unlike what is done to heat-treat a traditionally-crafted katana; it creates a sword with a softer core and harder edge. This allows the sword to best retain a keen edge whilst being able to flex with the shock of the strike or the parry.

The crossguard and pommel of the sword are of steel and the grip is of wood overlaid with black leather. The companion scabbard for the sword is of wood and is overlaid with black leather. A steel chape protects the tip of the scabbard.

Leaf bladed swords not only give a medieval-era sword a fantasy-like appearance, but they also put extra blade mass in the main striking region. While this does add weight to the tip, the increased mass also gives the blade a stronger bite when it strikes. This added weight necessarily adds weight in the tip and usually makes the sword feel heavier but Darkswords Sword of Fnor adequately counter-balances this with a well-tapered blade and elongated grip and pommel – this keeps this battle-ready fantasy longsword responsive and lends it a good feeling of agility with a two-handed grip.

I ****ing Love This Sword! I have been absolutely in love with this sword since Darksword introduced it. In all that time, my desire never wavered. Finally, I got a chance to order it, and right when KoA had it in stock. The day after I ordered it it was already out of stock. Almost as if the gods intended it…
Upon opening it I saw that everything was straight and tight. It is far more beautiful in person than it is in pictures, absolutely gorgeous. Point of balance on mine is six inches from the guard, which is perfectly acceptable for a longsword. According to my scale, it weighs 3 pounds, 6 ounces, an excellent weight for a longsword. I subjected it to the British proof test and it easily passed. Everything remained straight and tight. I ordered the unsharpened version. About 30 minutes with an accusharp got it paper cutting sharp, which as sharp as I want my sword blades to be.
What really blew me away, aside from its beauty, is its handling. Like the description says, one would expect a leaf-bladed longsword to be blade heavy, but it isn’t. It’s very responsive, very quick and agile, yet the leaf blade also enables it to strike with authority. Bottom line – this is a superb sword. I’ve always wanted a functional version of Glamdring, and even though Darksword named this one for Feanor, I named mine Glamdring, and she is definitely worthy of the title “Foe Hammer.”
