Darksword Armory’s 16th Century Two-Handed Sword is based on an original found in the River Thames in London - it dated to about 1500-1525. This recreation has a blade of 5160 high carbon steel. The guard and pommel are crafted from steel and the wooden grip is fitted with a tight wrap of brown leather.

The sword comes with a wooden scabbard with an overlaid outer layer of brown leather. A steel chape is fitted to its tip.

While civilians often carried lighter swords for self defense in the Renaissance compared to their Medieval counterparts, large and broad-bladed swords were still used on the battlefield where a more durable weapon was needed for a battle’s worth of contact with armor and opposing weapons

Large two-handed swords such as this were often used by the various mercenaries popular in Europe for harassing pike formations - the ‘’Doppelsöldner’’ of the Landesknechts specialized in the dangerous job of disrupting pikemen and for this they were paid double-wages as incentive; hence Doppelsöldner, which translates into Double-Soldier.

The broad and long blade of these swords can cut and hack with great force - a complex ringed guard serves to protect the hand and perhaps to entrap opposing weapons. A broad and blunt ricasso serves to give the user a place to put a grip above the guard to shorten up his form when necessary or to use sword in a ‘’half-swording’’ technique.
