Mainstays of the Viking era, Spangenhelms are characterized by their construction, whereby steel strips (spangen) are used to join the steel plates of the cap. For strength and safety, the cap of this reconstruction is comprised of two halves, welded together along a back to front centre line. Steel rivets are used to attach the overlying banding and 3mm. medium-flare nose-guard (nasal). Crafted in 16 gauge steel with full leather liner and chinstrap.

Spangenhelm #1 This helmet has to be one of the best buys on the internet for those interested in Viking/Saxon/Norman gear. This helmet is very well made, looks great and, unlike many period helmets, it’s very comfortable to wear. The 16 gauge steel construction is just the right balance between strength and weight for extended wearability. It has a nice polished finish and if you prefer something less bright, a little elbow grease and steel wool will fix that. I used a bit of cold gun blue thinned with vinegar to “age” mine a bit. The leather liner and strap are well crafted and seem plenty strong for lots of years of use.

The nasal guard is not as obtrusive as one might expect though the helmet I received had some very sharp edges on the inside of the guard. A small file or diamond stick will easily fix the problem but this is something that the manufacturer should not have allowed on a finished product.

Overall I am extremely pleased with my purchase and the fast service from the Kult.

Solid and attractive helmet. A++ Can’t say much that the other reviewers haven’t already stated. Helmet-buying can be a chore because it’s often hard to tell what you are really going to get until its in your hand. Very attractive helmet in terms of fit and finish. Liner, strap, and metal are simple but high quality. No tacky add-ons or flimsy chain mail that falls apart just from routine handling. What you see is what you get. Everyone’s tastes are different but you probably won’t be disappointed if you are into Viking/Saxon era.

I purchased this helmet recently and am very happy with how it looks on a armor stand. The large size fits great for wearing an arming cap and coif. Highly recommend.
