The Paul Chen / Hanwei Danish War Axe is undoubtedly a fine example of the use of peacetime agricultural tools as weapons in time of war. Equally at home felling trees or adversaries, the axe evokes a fearsome picture of the Viking woodsman at war. This type of large two handed axe was also used by King Harold Godwinson’s Housecarls in the defense of England against the Viking and Norman invasions of 1066. Sharpened, Fully Functional.

short version: heavy, sturdy, sharp but thick edge, blade cover is nicely made, handle is solid but overly thick and somewhat unwieldy. overall a functional if somewhat less historically accurate example of a viking axe.

long version: this thing is HEAVY. like, splitting maul heavy. historically accurate(for a fighting axe) it ain’t. that being said…IT CHOPS. nimble it is not, strong it very much is. the blade is between a quarter inch at the eye to a bit over an eighth in thickness at the start of the edge bevel. not sure if that counts as distal taper, but that’s what it seems like, for what it’s worth. as i said above, it’s heavy. honestly too heavy. all the weight is at the head and it tries to drop like a rock if you try to hold it extended. the point of balance is around an inch below the bottom of the beard. the edge is very sharp, but thick like a maul. cuts well enough, but it’s more of a shallow initial cut with weight and momentum doing the rest. that being said, it is fixable with a belt grinder or an angle grinder. the points are both sharp enough to thrust and hook with, and the back of the head is thick enough to use as a hammer at need. the biggest issue though…the handle. its simply too big, and this i coming from a guy who wears extra large gloves. it needs to be AT LEAST a half inch smaller all around to be usable. the handle being that big also transfers a bit more shock than i’d like. that being said, the handle is solid and the swell at the end does come in handy. this is another problem that can be fixed with a belt or angle grinder, but i feel it still takes away from the overall function. mine came just a bit loose on the handle, but that can be fixed by peening the cross pin a bit more or shimming it. the only other thing left is the blade cover. its simple, functional, handsome, and put together well. and the blade is sharp enough that it’s a necessity. all in all, not perfect, not 100% historically accurate, but still functional and one hell of a brutal bastard.

The other review (*)I submitted was for a different company(AandA) that I received a different Axe order from. I sincerely apologize. The Hanwei Axe is awesome. It cuts through everything I put in front of it and still kept the mirror shine on the blade and the edge sharp. It is acceptable sharp, however I would’ve appreciated it a bit sharper. I also don’t like the brass pin mechanism, because the sheer weight of the head is going to require me to wedge the haft eventually. Those previous small criticisms are the only bad things I have to say., and the main reason the Hanwei Danish model received 4 stars instead of 5 from me. I’m very happy with this purchase. The think is as live as they get and it is also very pleasing to the eyes and feels great in my hands. It makes for an excellent workout tool as well. I am seriously considering buying another. I always attempt to own two of every sharp edge weapon I like. Anyway, I’m sorry again for the other post, again I got this sight confused with the people that sent me a similar item that was broken and way overpriced.
