The Practical Bastard Sword from Kingston Arms is an updated reissue of the classic Hanwei sword, but now returning with updated fittings and improved construction while preserving the qualities that made the original a popular choice. Designed for durability and performance, this sword offers the reach, authority, and versatility of originals, but with a blunted blade for martial arts sparring or stage / theatre combat. That practicality coupled with an attractive design mark it out as it well suited for collectors, HEMA practitioners, reenactors, and enthusiasts. It is finished on both the grip and scabbard with plain, natural tan leather that you can dye to your preference or let it age and darken naturally for a fine leather “patina”.
The blade measures just over 38 inches in length and is forged from resilient 5160 spring steel, a material valued for its excellent flexibility, shock resistance, and ability to endure the stresses of repeated use. Weighing approximately 3 lbs 12 oz with a point of balance at about 5 inches from the guard, the sword maintains responsive, but authoritative handling offering adaptable control whether practicing techniques or engaging in reenactment scenarios. The blunted edges and rounded tip provide a safer profile for controlled contact, while the robust blade construction helps minimize burring during use.
The redesigned guard and pommel feature crisp lines and a lightly antique-finished patina that evoke the appearance of early historical examples. A securely peened pommel ensures a solid hilt assembly, and the leather-wrapped grip provides a firm, comfortable hold. An all-leather scabbard accompanies the sword, offering flexible protection for storage and transport while providing added safety in the case of a fall or stumble compared to rigid wood-core designs. Combining historical inspiration, practical performance, and customizable features, the Practical Bastard Sword remains a versatile and capable interpretation of the classic medieval hand-and-a-half weapon.
Historically, the “bastard sword” earned its name from its hybrid nature, bridging the gap between single-handed arming swords and larger two-handed weapons. Popular among foot soldiers by the early 16th century, this versatile form provided extended reach and powerful cutting capability without sacrificing maneuverability. This modern interpretation captures that balance of strength and agility while incorporating durable materials and updated construction methods.
Though Hanwei may have shuttered, the recreation of classic favorites such as this sword is happening under Frenchie Jin, a former protégé of Hanwei’s Paul Chen and a key figure in the original development and manufacturing of Hanwei swords. With direct involvement in their creation from the beginning, his expertise ensures the continuation of the quality, performance, and design philosophy that established the Hanwei name. To better guide customers in selecting the appropriate style of sword, CAS has reorganized its product lines by placing the HEMA and medieval European swords previously offered under the CAS Hanwei name into the Kingston Arms brand. This shift groups like-minded designs under a dedicated label, maintaining a clear focus on European sword traditions while providing a more streamlined and intuitive experience for collectors and practitioners alike.
