This classically styled Qing Dynasty Jian is responsive and agile in the hand and its broad blade is well suited for decisive cutting; the diamond cross section in the blade and its raised midsection gives it plenty of reinforcement for delivering a powerful, puncturing thrust as well. Its a simple, but sturdily executed sword with the themed motif of the Yazi; a Chinese mythical beast with a dragon’s head and a wolf body. As one of the 9 sons of the dragon, the Yazi is characterized by its tempestuous temper and fierceness and this made the creature a popular theme for ornamentation of Qing swords and weapons. Its pommel bears a stylized tiger face with banded stripes and bared teeth.

The blade is forged from GB 60Si2MnA High Carbon Manganese Spring Steel (a steel similar to 5160 high carbon steel) with a tempered hardness of 54-55 HRc – it will cut tatami well with paired with good technique. The base of the blade on a single side has the etched LK Chen logo. The guard and pommel are detailed cast brass and the grip is tough and smoothly polished Rosewood. The sword is paired with a scabbard of matching hand-carved Rosewood and is thoroughly embellished with intricately detailed bright cast brass fittings. A knotted brown cord completes the scabbard.

Beautifully Balanced, Solidly Built Jian —Exceeded My Expectations

I don’t usually write reviews, but I wanted to take the time for this one since there weren’t any others when I ordered it. The sword arrived fast. Shipping was quick and smooth. Right out of the box, it impressed me.

The blade is straight and has a really nice balance. It needed the regular first cleaning of the factory oil, but once cleaned, the sharp blade is beautifully polished with no uneven marks. It rings cleanly and returned to perfectly true when flexed. The geometry is accurate: diamond cross-section with a good distal taper. It’s light but not certainly not flimsy, and handles exactly how a proper jian should, responsive and stable.

The fittings are brass, with traditional yazi motifs that look even better in person. There are some small casting blemishes here and there on the guard, but that’s part of real hand-casting, nothing that affects quality or structure. The pommel is perfect and fits snug to the handle. The beautiful rosewood handle and scabbard are smooth, dense, and matched in color. Everything is tight and secure and the tang is full and peened. The entire guard and hilt assembly feels very solid.

Overall, this is a very well-made jian. It feels balanced, handles great, and looks elegant. For anyone considering it, this is a real sword with both craftsmanship and performance. I am very happy with this purchase.
