The Musashi Koi Katana is a lavishly embellished sword from the Musashi Platinum Collection featuring their highest quality Japanese swords that are a showcase of traditional Japanese sword craftsmanship. Hand-forged using the Gomai-kitae technique, this katana features a five-layer blade constructed from 1060 and 1095 high carbon steels melded together in the traditional manner to create a sword that is both resilient and well-capable of retaining an edge. It was then clay tempered to produce a genuine hamon akin to those seen on historical examples where the steel has been quench hardenend to a crystalline steel structure hardness along its edge. The full beauty of the blade hamon and its steel were brought out with a high level of finishing polish in a process that is laborious and intensive, but results in a finely polished steel.
The katana’s design is highlighted by a maru gata style brass tsuba which intricately depicts two koi fish in high relief art detailing. In Japanese culture, koi symbolize strength, perseverance, and the ability to overcome adversity, reflecting the enduring spirit of the samurai. The handle (tsuka) is wrapped in black cotton cord over genuine ray skin (same), providing both aesthetic appeal and a secure grip. Complementing the handle are matching antiqued brass fuchi and kashira fittings, adorned with koi motifs, reinforcing the sword’s thematic unity.
