The Combat Hand and a Half Sword from Red Dragon Armoury is a 13th Century longsword with a broad blade built for sport and stage combat. Its tempered blade is crafted from EN42J high carbon steel and it possesses a core hardness of approx. 45 HRc and an edge hardness of about 50 HRc. The guard and pommel are of steel and the grip is wood which is overlaid in tightly-fitted leather. The blade is peened into the hilt for an altogether durable construction.

The sword is matched with a scabbard of carved wood which is wrapped in fitted leather and completed with an integrated sword belt and a protective chape of steel.

    1. not telling

its pretty great for the most part, but after about a week of having it, little scuff marks have appeared near the base of the sword that i think came from the sheath. it’s also a tad heavy, though that’s probably just me since i’ve never had a sword before. i’ve also noticed the blade is *very* slightly curved. and the pommel smells gross, like pennies. aside from that, very nice sword, i’m enjoying it

This sword is light, not too firm and has a very solid blade presence. Its great in binds and can be used with one hand if you have a decent amount of forearm strength. It bends good and is very good for hema provided everybody is in proper attire and armour. The scabbard is always nice to have and the sword itself is well built with no rattle or loose bits. Very good product, highly recommend for first timers to hema or harnsfecten.

I’ve had this for a number of months, and while the build quality has seemed to be quite good there are problems with it that I’ll call out. Minor things:
      – The blade and the guard are a few degrees off, which hasn’t affected it’s usability.
      – The leather wrap on the handle is thin, so far it’s holding up, but I question it’s longevity.
      – The scabbard was loose, no friction to hold itself or the sword in place. I added some very thin shims myself which resolved the issue. I do wish it had come with a nicer fit.

      The problem for me:
      – the point of balance is solid 6 off the guard, so it feel hefty in the hands. For a hand and a half sword the blade seems long, which I knew going into the purchase, and for a long sword (which a 36 inch blade is more akin to) the handle would be too short. The geometry (and the small pommel) cause the balance to be so blade heavy. For me this creates a sword that is sub-par in both situations. It’s handle is too short for it to feel great when using two hands (my off hand stays on the pommel), and the blade is too long and unbalanced for it feel nimble in a single hand.

It looks cool as anything, which was one of my factors choosing this over others (along with the price point). I’m definitely enjoying my training with it, as it’s great to train with some sub-optimal situations.

Push come to shove, I won’t recommend this to a friend if they were interested in using it for any meaningful training.
