The Sandai Kitetsu, one of the legendary swords wielded by Roronoa Zoro in the popular anime and manga One Piece, is recreated here by Hanbon Forge as a fully functional katana designed for both collectors and cutting enthusiasts. Unlike many decorative anime replicas, this sword is hand-forged with performance in mind, combining authentic katana construction with the distinctive appearance of Zoro’s iconic blade. With balanced handling and durable materials, it serves equally well as a striking display piece or a capable cutting sword.
The blade measures 28 5/8 inches and is forged from 1095 high carbon steel, a steel prized for its ability to take a keen edge and maintain excellent cutting performance and it is tempered to a 58 HRc hardness. The sword’s overall length is 39 5/8 inches, giving it the proportions expected of a traditional katana. Weighing 2 lbs 6 oz with a point of balance slightly over 5 inches from the guard, the sword has lively and responsive handling that feels comfortable and controlled when used with two hands. The blade geometry supports both slicing cuts and precise thrusts, making it a versatile functional katana.
A full tang construction anchors the blade securely within the tsuka measuring just over 9 inches, providing a stable two-handed grip with excellent leverage. The wooden handle is wrapped tightly in traditional ito over panels of rayskin, offering both visual authenticity and a secure hold during use. Solid metal fittings complete the hilt, lending the sword a durable and substantial feel.
The sword is paired with a wooden saya scabbard finished in lacquer, designed to protect the blade while complementing the katana’s striking aesthetic. The scabbard includes traditional fittings and a sageo cord, completing the classic presentation expected of a Japanese-style sword.
Within the world of One Piece, the Sandai Kitetsu is the third blade of the infamous Kitetsu line—swords rumored to carry a curse due to their incredible sharpness and deadly reputation. Zoro famously tests the blade’s curse by tossing it into the air and extending his arm beneath the falling edge, trusting fate and his own resolve. The sword spares him, symbolizing both his fearlessness and the powerful bond between warrior and blade. This functional recreation captures the spirit of that legendary weapon while offering the durability and handling of a real, hand-forged katana.
