The Swiss Holbein Dagger was a popular in late medieval / Renaissance Switzerland and Southern Germany. A more stylized descendent of the Baselard, this attractive yet popular dagger was a common sidearm for the famed Swiss Mercenaries. The elongated guard and pommel serve to couch the hand in place and keep the dagger from sliding through the hand upon contact with a target to ensure the delivery of maximum penetrative force. This example has a robust grip which is well-suited to larger hands.

The blade of this Swiss Holbein dagger is stainless steel; the guard and pommel cap are brass and the grip is carved wood. Included with the dagger is a sheath of durable leather with stitched construction. It has an integrated belt loop and buttoned retaining strap.

A nicely made and beefy economy dagger of the classical Holbien style. The hilt is a good solid hardwood with solid brass accents in the typical Swiss style. Feels good in the hand. The blade is a very sharp double edge diamond cross section made of decent utilitarian steel. This dagger definitely looks the part and feels nice in the hand. For the price, I would not put the weapon through grueling torture tests or serious combat exercises, but at the same time I would feel quite confidant to defend my person with a weapon of this size and sharpness and design. Also comes with a thick full grain leather belt sheath as well. Reminds me vaguely of the boot knives and folding buck knives that were very popular in the 1970’s and 1980’s with brass and wood handle scales, made in Pakistan, that you could pick up at flea markets at a reasonable price and would hold up surprisingly better than their prices suggested they would. A very good value indeed!
