Immortalized by Mel Gibsons portrayal of William Wallace, the Claymore sword has become one of the distinct, martial symbols of Scotland and its conflicts with England. Though the definitive forward-sloping quatrefoil crossguard Claymores are a late Medieval / Renaissance type of sword, there were other large two-handed swords used in an earlier Medieval Scotland. These could date to the history spanning the Wars for Scottish Independence, of which William Wallace famously features within. Those swords may have been similar to this Early Claymore.

This large, early Claymore has an unsharpened blade of high carbon steel. The crossguard and pommel are of antique-finished steel and the crossguard and ricasso are tightly overlaid with dark brown leather.

To say this thing is massive is an understatement. I added the extra sharpening based on reviews elsewhere and it is indeed ultra sharp.

It looks nice and has some massive heft to it. I have no idea how people wielded something like this and I’m not a small guy. I purchased this as mostly a wall hanger and show piece to go below the Braveheart poster in my theater and I guess for the most part it fits that bill.

I have two cons on this particular sword. First is that the cross guard is not in the greatest condition. Mine has blemishes like it was constructed with sub par metal…almost a used look which I wasn’t overly happy with, but not enough to go through the hassle of exchanging it as I think they are all probably that way to some degree. The second is that the leather handle doesn’t have any sort of texture, making it difficult to handle without it slipping around and with something of this size, you don’t want that.

All said, it’s fine for a mostly decorate, battle ready sword.
