This sword replicates a style of arming sword that was popular in the 15th century and swords of its type and others like it are often referred to as “Castillon” swords after the Castillon Hoard of swords – a group of 80 swords all recovered from the same location in the Dordogne River in France. The type was popular in both England and France and theories abound as to how so many swords of similar style and manufacture all ended up in the Dordogne during the Hundred Years War.

These swords are an ideal arming sword of the period, they have a strong profile taper and a thick, rigid midsection making them ideal for puncturing the weaker points of an armored defense at the time, though they can often cut and slice better than expected with their optimized distal taper toward the main cutting section. The Tod Cutler Castillon sword has a blade forged from 1060 high carbon steel which is well tempered. Its resilient hilt is crafted from mild steel and the wooden grip is expertly bound in high quality leather with its tactile grip improved with cord impression and risers.

The sword comes with a premium and well crafted scabbard of wood with a binding of high quality leather and a brass chape. Sword hangers are knotted onto the scabbard with a belt hook for attaching to the included sword belt and the sword belt has brass fittings to adjust it for wear. A demonstration on how this arrangement is worn can be seen in the linked video.
